Fishing Lake is long and narrow and measuring over four kilometres in length and 350 metres wide on average. It is surrounded by rocky shorelines and is a popular fishing destination. Previous property owners planned to subdivide the area into cottage lots until the Nature Conservancy of Canada stepped forward. Fishing Lake is surrounded by provincial Wilderness Area . Its acquisition has been a long standing goal of conservation groups in Nova Scotia. It is dominated by Acadian forest composed of red spruce, black spruce and balsam fir with occasional stands of Tamarack and scattered deciduous trees. The region supports several endangered species, including moose and sensitive boreal felt lichen.
Young's Island has extensive salt marshes and intertidal mudflats, a mix of coastal forest with black spruce and balsam fir trees as well as coastal barren ecosystems. The area is home to significant populations of waterfowl, bird and marine life. Young’s Island is known for its picturesque scenery and is used by boaters and kayakers.
